The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has announced an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about the environment and integrity. The VFA is recruiting seven Fisheries Officers to safeguard Victoria’s renowned fisheries, with positions available in northern Victoria and around Melbourne.
The new roles are strategically located to enhance the diversity and inclusivity of the Fisheries team. In a notable move to encourage female participation, three positions in Bendigo, Tatura, and Swan Hill are exclusively open to women. This initiative aims to increase the representation of women in the field, which currently stands at 21 per cent, with a specific focus on the northern region where only one of twelve officers is a woman.
Furthermore, the VFA is seeking to strengthen its connection with the Vietnamese and Chinese communities in Melbourne and Phillip Island by reserving four positions for individuals from these cultural backgrounds. This effort recognises the significant interest in fishing within these communities and aims to foster better representation and understanding.
Travis Dowling, Chief Executive Officer of the VFA, highlighted the diverse appeal of fishing and the importance of reflecting this diversity within the Fisheries team. “Fishing attracts people from all walks of life, and we want our team to reflect that diversity,” Dowling said. “By opening specific positions to women and individuals from Vietnamese and Chinese backgrounds, we aim to build a more inclusive team that resonates with the communities we serve.”
Successful applicants will embark on a comprehensive 10-week residential training course, equipping them with the skills needed to undertake the diverse responsibilities of a Fisheries Officer. These duties range from educating new fishers about sustainable practices to enforcing fishing regulations and tackling illegal fishing activities. Officers also collaborate with various natural resource management, maritime safety, and emergency management agencies to protect aquatic environments and ensure public safety.
The role of a Fisheries Officer promises a dynamic and fulfilling career, with no two days being the same. Officers have the opportunity to engage in a variety of development programs and enjoy spending significant time outdoors, interacting with a diverse array of individuals.
To provide prospective candidates with more information, the VFA will host an hour-long online information session on Wednesday, 5 June at 7pm. This session will offer insights into the roles and allow participants to ask questions directly to current Fisheries Officers. Applications are open now and will close on Sunday, 7 July 2024.
For those interested in a career that combines environmental stewardship with community engagement, this recruitment drive represents a unique opportunity.
