He emphasised the need for regulations to prevent digital exploitation and ensure safety and dignity. “Our government is committed to protecting the rights and privacy of all individuals, especially women, who are disproportionately affected by misuse of AI. These new regulations are a crucial step in safeguarding against digital exploitation and harassment.”
The government plans to introduce new laws banning the sharing of deepfake pornography, with severe penalties for violators. The new offences will apply to sexually explicit material depicting adults, while child abuse material will continue to be dealt with under separate offences.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus stated, “We know it overwhelmingly affects women and girls who are the target of this kind of deeply offensive and harmful behaviour. It can inflict deep, long-lasting harm on victims.”
The legislation is expected to receive strong bipartisan support in parliament. It aims to address the increasing generation and distribution of pornographic deepfake images, a trend that has raised significant concern. Incidents involving children and teenagers being bullied with deepfake pornography highlight the urgent need for more education on AI-generated abuse.
