A taste of home: Refugees share recipes and stories in new cookbook

Australia for UNHCR has launched an online cookbook, “Flavours of Hope,” showcasing treasured recipes from current and former refugees. This initiative aims to raise funds for the UN Refugee Agency ahead of World Refugee Day on 20 June 2024.

“Flavours of Hope” features recipes and stories from ten individuals who have found safety in Australia or are living as refugees overseas. Australia for UNHCR CEO, Trudi Mitchell, highlighted the resilience and generosity of the contributors, encouraging everyone to download the free cookbook from their website.

The cookbook’s release aligns with World Refugee Day, which celebrates the talent, contributions, and resilience of refugees. Australia for UNHCR Ambassador and Boost Juice founder, Janine Allis, is donating funds for every download, supporting UNHCR’s efforts to aid those fleeing conflict, disaster, and persecution.

Notable contributors include former AFLW player and Australia for UNHCR Ambassador Akec Makur Chuot, Melbourne restaurant owner Hamed Allahyari, and Captain of the Afghan women’s football team, Fatima Yousufi.

Yousufi, sharing her passion for Afghan cuisine, remarked, “Afghan food has a very special taste. The flavours are so unique and whenever those smells hit my nose, it takes me straight back to my childhood. Eating Afghan food in Australia has allowed me to feel much more alive and connected.”

“Flavours of Hope” not only presents delicious recipes but also shares the rich cultural stories behind them, bridging communities through the universal language of food.
