Two high-scoring encounters set the CAA Centre in Brampton alight on the second day of North America’s premier cricket league, with the Montreal Tigers and Brampton Wolves securing emphatic victories in the fourth edition of the Global T20 Canada.
Australian great David Warner, recently retired from international cricket, made a triumphant return, leading the Brampton Wolves to a commanding 59-run win over last year’s runners-up, Surrey Jaguars. Defending champions Montreal Tigers also began their campaign strongly, defeating Bangla Tigers Mississauga by 33 runs.
Warner, participating in the GT20 Canada after almost six years, expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining the tournament. “GT20 gave me a nice opportunity to come back, and I’m happy to be back here,” Warner said.
Opening the innings alongside Canada’s Aaron Johnson, Warner showcased glimpses of his aggressive style, scoring 15 off 11 balls before being dismissed by Mohammed Nabi. The Wolves then relied on a powerful performance from George Munsey, who scored 69 off 44 balls, propelling the team to a formidable total of 198 for 6. Munsey’s explosive 21-ball fifty and a vital 64-run partnership with Kobe Herft set the foundation for the Wolves’ total.
Despite efforts from Shreyas Movva and Terrance Hinds, the Jaguars were unable to chase down the target, finishing at 139 for 7. The Wolves’ bowlers, led by Akhil Kumar, who also contributed with the bat, maintained pressure throughout the innings.
In the day’s earlier match, the Montreal Tigers began their title defence with a solid performance against Bangla Tigers Mississauga. Montreal posted 189/6, thanks to contributions from Tim Seifert, Ashton Agar, Dilpreet Bajwa, and Benjamin Manenti. Chris Lynn provided early fireworks with two sixes before being dismissed, while Seifert and Agar powered the Tigers past 100 runs within ten overs.
David Wiese, with 3/30, was the pick of the Bangla Tigers’ bowlers, helping to restrict Montreal’s scoring in the latter stages of their innings. However, Mississauga’s chase faltered despite a valiant effort from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 64 off 39 balls. Agar’s dismissal of Gurbaz effectively ended the Bangla Tigers’ hopes, and they finished at 156/8.
The GT20 Canada continues to be a significant event in the Canadian, North American, and global cricket calendar, providing a platform to showcase the sport’s growth in the region. The fourth edition of this marquee T20 league runs from July 25 to August 11 in Brampton, Ontario.
