After a captivating ten weeks, the Premier’s Reading Challenge in Tasmania has wrapped up, celebrating the reading achievements of thousands of students across the state. Premier Jeremy Rockliff led the applause for the 30,000 participants who embraced the challenge, recognising the pivotal role reading plays in personal development and lifelong learning.

Premier Rockliff commended the students for their enthusiasm, highlighting how reading can spark imagination and lead to countless adventures. “Books have the power to ignite imagination and unlock endless adventures for our children and young people,” he remarked, underscoring the transformative power of literature.

This year’s challenge saw participation from 151 schools, a testament to the widespread commitment to promoting literacy. Education Minister Jo Palmer expressed gratitude towards the educators and families who supported the initiative. She thanked teachers, principals, school librarians, and school staff for their dedication and enthusiasm, which were crucial in encouraging students to dive into books. Minister Palmer also recognised the vital role of parents and carers, noting that reading together or supporting children’s reading habits is one of the most impactful gifts they can offer.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge aligns with the broader educational goals of the state, as highlighted by the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. This plan includes a significant investment of $3 million aimed at extending literacy programmes to all children in Years 3 to 6 by 2026. This initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that every child has access to resources that will support their reading and literacy development.

For those looking to continue their reading journey, additional resources are available through local libraries. A range of books, e-books, comics, and magazines can be found at www.libraries.tas.gov.au, offering ample opportunities for students and families to keep the love of reading alive.

The success of the Premier’s Reading Challenge not only highlights the achievements of the students but also reinforces the importance of fostering a reading culture within the community. As the challenge comes to a close, it is clear that the passion for reading continues to flourish among Tasmania’s young learners, promising a bright future filled with literary adventures.
