Simon & Schuster Australia has announced a worldwide publishing deal with Arnold Dix, an Australian barrister, scientist, and engineer, for his upcoming memoir, The Promise.

The book is set to be published in February 2025 and promises to offer readers a deep dive into the life and experiences of a man who has repeatedly demonstrated courage, expertise, and a commitment to making the impossible possible.

Arnold Dix captured the hearts of 1.3 billion Indians in November 2023 when he led the successful rescue of 41 workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas. The tunnel, linking major religious sites, became the backdrop for a life-and-death operation.

Dix’s leadership, technical expertise, and humility shone through when he famously bowed before a makeshift temple at the tunnel entrance and promised the workers would be home safe for Christmas. This moment not only highlighted his professional acumen but also highlighted the deep spirituality and humanity that guided his actions during the Diwali rescue.

Beyond this extraordinary event, Dix’s career is filled with high-stakes challenges. As the president of the peak advisory body on underground infrastructure for the United Nations, Dix has been involved in investigations ranging from train tunnels beneath Ground Zero after 9/11 to the aftermath of the London and Madrid bombings.

His memoir will explore these experiences, offering readers a narrative rich with themes of adventure, sacrifice, and selflessness.

Reflecting on the upcoming release, Dix said, “I am still getting used to the label of ‘hero.’ I don’t see myself as one. I’m just someone who had a few skills and felt like I could help in a difficult situation. This book isn’t about heart-racing action or daredevil antics; it’s about listening to ourselves and doing what we know is right.”

Emma Nolan, Non-Fiction Publisher at Simon & Schuster Australia, praised Dix’s story for its inspirational qualities. “Arnold Dix’s acts of kindness show that with compassion, teamwork, and generosity, even the most seemingly impossible outcomes can be achieved,” she said.

Dix’s story has already garnered praise from prominent figures. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded him as “a truly great Australian,” while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire Anand Mahindra also expressed admiration for his efforts and communication skills.

The Promise is poised to resonate with readers seeking both inspiration and practical advice, making it a compelling addition to the growing trend of memoirs that blend personal growth with broader societal impact.
