The race to name the men’s One-Day Cup trophy is down to the final three. After weeks of fan engagement and thousands of votes across Cricket Australia’s platforms, Michael Bevan, Dean Jones, and Andrew Symonds have emerged as the leading contenders. Cricket Australia has been overwhelmed with responses, with more than 10,000 fans sharing their thoughts via social media and over 8,000 taking part in an online poll.
The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame (ACHoF), led by Chair Peter King, is now tasked with evaluating the achievements and legacy of these three players before making a recommendation to the Cricket Australia Board. Each of these cricketers has left a lasting impact on the game, not just in Australia but on the global stage. Their contributions, particularly in One-Day cricket, have earned them legendary status.
Bevan’s legacy as a finisher is unmatched. His ability to anchor an innings and guide his team to victory became the stuff of legend, especially in Australia’s 1999 and 2003 World Cup campaigns. Domestically, he played for South Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania, and across 78 matches, he accumulated over 3,200 runs at an astonishing average of 61.18.
Dean Jones was one of the trailblazers of One-Day cricket. His aggressive style, combined with a sharp cricketing brain, changed how Australia approached the 50-over format. His efforts helped Australia secure the 1987 World Cup, and his domestic career saw him lead Victoria to victory in the 1994-95 season.
Andrew Symonds brought a different energy to the game, with his all-round abilities making him a key player in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007. Symonds’ powerful hitting and useful bowling earned him a reputation as a game-changer, particularly in high-stakes matches.
Cricket fans can expect more content celebrating these players’ careers on CA’s digital channels in the days to come. Highlight packages, career retrospectives, and discussions are all part of the lead-up to the final decision on whose name will grace the One-Day Cup trophy. Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that Bevan, Jones, and Symonds have each left an indelible mark on the game, and the decision will be a difficult one.
James Allsopp, CA’s Chief of Cricket, thanked fans for their engagement, noting that the passion displayed by supporters reflects the significance of this honour. Peter King echoed these sentiments, commending fans for narrowing down such an illustrious shortlist. The ACHoF Committee now has the challenging task of selecting just one name to be etched on the trophy in perpetuity.
The entire domestic summer of cricket, including the One-Day Cup, can be viewed live on Kayo Sports, cricket.com.au, and the CA Live app. Fans eagerly await the final decision, knowing that the chosen name will forever symbolise excellence in Australian One-Day cricket.
