As Wayanad, a constituency in the Indian state of Kerala, prepares for its by-election on 13th November, two names are being closely watched on the opposition side: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and BJP’s rising star Navya Haridas. While Priyanka’s entry into the race has been widely expected, there is still some speculation about who will officially represent the BJP. Though earlier reports pointed to actress-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar, it is now suggested that Navya Haridas, a young mechanical engineer and BJP’s Mahila Morcha State General Secretary, is the likely candidate.

Priyanka’s debut in Wayanad comes as her brother Rahul Gandhi vacates the seat, choosing to retain Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. This move offers the Congress an opportunity to consolidate its presence in Kerala, a state that has been one of its strongholds. For Priyanka, this bypoll is a crucial first step in her electoral career, and she’s already expressed her determination to connect with the diverse voters of Wayanad.

The BJP, which is yet to make a final announcement, faces an interesting choice. Khushbu Sundar, who has a storied political journey, initially garnered attention as the likely contender. However, recent developments point to Navya Haridas, a fresh face with no criminal record and local political experience, having served as a two-time councillor in the Kozhikode Corporation. Navya represents the new wave of leadership within the BJP, and her candidacy could signal the party’s intent to appeal to younger voters in Kerala.

For our readers unfamiliar with Wayanad, the constituency spans parts of the Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts in northern Kerala. It’s a mix of rural and urban voters, and the by-election is being seen as a critical moment in Indian politics, not just for Congress and BJP, but for the opposition INDIA bloc. The Communist Party of India (CPI), part of this opposition alliance, has fielded Sathyan Mokeri as its candidate, adding further complexity to the three-way contest.

Priyanka’s entry has energised the Congress campaign, while Navya Haridas’s potential nomination reflects the BJP’s strategy of pushing new leadership into the fray. The BJP has been steadily building its presence in Kerala, a state where it has traditionally struggled to gain ground. If Khushbu Sundar is ultimately chosen, her star power could attract significant attention, but Navya’s grassroots appeal shouldn’t be underestimated.

Whichever candidate the BJP puts forward, the Wayanad bypoll will be a key test of how local dynamics play out in the larger context of Indian politics. With Priyanka making her electoral debut and the opposition working hard to prevent a Congress sweep, Wayanad is set to be a fascinating battleground this November.
