Melbourne-based writer and filmmaker Anita Barar has added a prestigious accolade to her name, receiving the Dr. Sarojini Naidu International Award for Working Women 2024. This award, named after the iconic Indian poet and freedom fighter known as the “Nightingale of India,” celebrates women making impactful contributions across diverse fields. Organised by the International Chamber of Media & Entertainment Industry (ICMEI) in association with the International Women’s Film Forum, the event underscored the importance of cultural and social work on a global scale.

Held on October 23rd, the ceremony welcomed dignitaries like the Ambassador of Venezuela and the High Commissioner of Lesotho, with Dr. Sandeep Marwah, an acclaimed filmmaker and Dada Saheb awardee, as the host. Though Barar was unable to attend in person, her niece accepted the award on her behalf, marking a touching moment for her family and supporters.

A seasoned writer, playwright, and poet in both Hindi and English, Barar is known for her contributions to film and radio, especially as a producer and broadcaster in Hindi journalism. Her recognition at this international forum reflects the global influence of Melbourne’s creative voices, bridging communities and championing cultural exchange.

We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution.
