Foreign Minister Penny Wong is gearing up to welcome India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, to Canberra today, 5th November, for the 15th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue. The meeting, scheduled for 8:50 AM AEDT, will feature discussions on an expansive list of topics, including clean energy, trade, investment, defence, and maritime security. Following the dialogue, both ministers will address the media in a joint press conference.

Sharing her thoughts before the meeting, Minister Wong emphasised the strength of Australia-India ties, stating, “Australia and India are close partners with strong strategic, economic, and community ties—almost one million Australians trace their heritage to India.” She highlighted that the two nations share a vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, with this Dialogue providing a moment to “take stock of the progress we have made, and to chart the way forward for the next phase in our relationship.”

This year’s meeting follows closely on the heels of Dr. Jaishankar’s visit to Brisbane, where he inaugurated the new Consulate General of India, aimed at serving Queensland’s growing Indian community and fostering stronger trade and educational connections. While in Brisbane, Dr. Jaishankar also honoured Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy with a visit to Roma Street Parklands, paying tribute to Gandhi’s message of peace and unity.

With the Indo-Pacific region increasingly at the centre of global focus, Wong and Jaishankar’s discussions are expected to explore shared ambitions in science, technology, and clean energy partnerships. Minister Wong noted that India’s role as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, set to become the third largest by the decade’s end, is critical as Australia looks to diversify its trade links and secure supply chains.

Wong and Jaishankar will also co-attend ‘Raisina Down Under’, the Australian edition of India’s Raisina Dialogue, providing a platform for regional perspectives on emerging trends. This marks Wong’s 19th meeting with Minister Jaishankar, underscoring the evolving depth of the Australia-India partnership and their commitment to steering both nations toward shared goals.
