This Diwali, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Adelaide turned on the charm, lighting up South Australia with a series of celebrations that blended tradition, community, and inclusivity. At the South Australian Parliament House, an event marked by joyful performances, cultural exhibits, and a delectable ‘Annakut’ feast, Diwali’s message of peace and unity took centre stage.

With over 51 homemade vegetarian delicacies, the ‘Annakut’ display—a mountain of colourful and aromatic offerings—was not just a culinary delight but a visual representation of collective hopes for prosperity. Minister Zoe Bettison, host of the event, welcomed leaders and officials who shared in the cultural festivities and witnessed the graceful performances of classical Indian dance by the talented young girls of “Kalanandhanam”—School of Dance.

A few days earlier, the temple opened its doors to young participants for a ‘Kids Diwali Celebration’ on 26th October, creating a memorable experience for children. Engaging activities allowed the little ones to explore Diwali’s themes of light and triumph in an interactive format. Traditional snacks with a modern twist and an array of fusion treats delighted everyone, adding a playful touch to the festival.

The grand celebration on 31 October welcomed over 2,000 guests, and the evening came alive with a puja led by Pujya Tilakmuni Swami and Pujya Nirvedhmuni Swami. Fireworks lit up the night, adding a dramatic crescendo to the celebration, symbolising Diwali’s message of light conquering darkness. Among the attendees, Premier Peter Malinauskas was especially moved, commending the BAPS children for their beautiful recitations and musical performances.

As Diwali celebrations continued into the New Year with the Annakut on 2 November, over 1,000 home-cooked vegetarian dishes were offered at the temple’s shrine. This vibrant display honoured the deities and carried the essence of community and generosity. The Red Cross also joined, collecting blood donations from 31 generous attendees, making a tangible impact by potentially saving 93 lives.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir has not only celebrated Diwali but has truly embraced the spirit of community and unity that the festival embodies. Through food, prayer, performances, and a little sparkle in the sky, Adelaide experienced Diwali with authenticity and warmth—an event where culture, community, and celebration met in harmony.
