Parramatta is preparing to stand united against gender-based violence as the Rotary Club of Parramatta leads a 1.1-kilometre street march on 4 December. The event is part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign, which runs from 25 November to 10 December. Local leaders, organisations, community members, and the Parramatta Police Area Command are joining forces to raise awareness and advocate for a safer community for women and families.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter emphasised the importance of creating a secure environment for all. “We want our City to be the safest place to live, work and play for women and families,” he said. The march will conclude at Parramatta Square, where speakers will address attendees, sharing strategies to combat violence and promote equality.

Adding to the campaign, Parramatta is introducing “Invest in Her”, a series of videos designed to highlight the importance of financial independence for women. Cr Zaiter, leveraging his expertise as a chartered accountant, spoke about the need to remove barriers holding women back. “About 74 per cent of women in our City have told us that childcare responsibilities are the biggest obstacle to employment. This is about equipping women with the tools to rebuild financial confidence and independence,” he said.

The initiative aspires to inspire long-term change, aiming to ensure future generations have access to a world of opportunity in Parramatta. “We owe it to our daughters to create a community where opportunities are endless,” Cr Zaiter added.

The march, set to begin at Mays Hill Oval in Parramatta Park and conclude at Parramatta Square, invites participants to walk in solidarity. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring hats and water bottles, and register in advance.

The campaign extends beyond the march. On 5 December, NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison will address a sold-out forum at PHIVE. Organised in collaboration with local domestic violence prevention groups, the forum will explore actionable solutions to empower women and ensure community safety.

This is Parramatta’s call to action—a collective step towards breaking the cycle of violence and fostering a culture of empowerment and equality.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.
