The Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference (IPSEC) 2024 in Perth has become a focal point for advancing space industry partnerships between India and Australia. A delegation from India’s space sector, led by Dr. Subba Rao Pavuluri, President of the Satcom Industry Association-India (SIA-India), is actively engaging with Australian counterparts to explore collaborative opportunities.
The delegation includes key figures such as Anil Prakash, Director General of SIA-India; Rajeev Gambhir, Deputy Director General; D.S. Govindrajan, Board Member; Dr. Alok Kumar Shrivastava, Director of Ananth Technologies; and Ms. Vimala Srinivasan from Invest & Trade Western Australia. Their discussions with the Consul General have centred on strengthening ties between the Indian and Australian space industries.
A highlight of this collaboration is the establishment of the India Pavilion at IPSEC 2024, where Indian space companies are showcasing their expertise across various domains. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in the space sector.
Recent developments have further solidified this partnership. In June 2024, Space Machines Company, an Australian in-space servicing firm, signed a Launch Service Agreement with India’s NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) for the Space MAITRI (Mission for Australia-India’s Technology, Research and Innovation) mission. Scheduled for 2026, this mission will see the launch of Space Machines Company’s second Optimus spacecraft aboard NSIL’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). The mission aims to address space debris management and sustainability, combining Australian spacecraft capabilities with Indian launch expertise.
Furthering this collaboration, Space Machines Company has partnered with India’s Ananth Technologies and Digantara. Ananth Technologies will provide comprehensive Assembly Integration and Testing (AIT) services, while Digantara will offer situational space awareness capabilities. These partnerships are pivotal for the success of the Space MAITRI mission and exemplify the deepening ties between the two nations’ space industries.
The Australian Government has also demonstrated its commitment to this partnership by investing in collaborative space projects between Australia and India. In April 2024, three projects were offered a total of $18 million under the International Space Investment India Projects program. These projects aim to address shared challenges such as climate change and enhance the capabilities of both nations in the space sector.
The Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference serves as a platform for these collaborations, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts from across the region. The participation of the Indian delegation and the establishment of the India Pavilion highlight the mutual interest in advancing space technology and innovation.
As the conference progresses, it is anticipated that further agreements and partnerships will be forged, paving the way for a robust and collaborative space industry between India and Australia. These initiatives not only enhance the technological capabilities of both nations but also contribute to the broader goals of sustainable development and regional security.
The ongoing engagements at IPSEC 2024 reflect a shared vision for the future of space exploration and utilisation, with India and Australia poised to play significant roles on the global stage.
