Australian cricket hit a historic milestone yesterday, with an unprecedented 152,375 fans attending Day 1 of the NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test and KFC BBL|14 matches at the MCG, SCG, and Optus Stadium.
This marks a 26 pe cent increase from last year’s record of 120,662, showcasing the sport’s surging popularity.
At the MCG, 87,242 fans witnessed Australia score 6-311 in the NRMA Insurance Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India, the highest-ever attendance for a single day of Test cricket against India in Australia.
In Sydney, 23,212 spectators saw the Sydney Sixers defeat the Melbourne Stars by eight wickets in the largest Boxing Day crowd ever at the SCG.
The day concluded in Perth, where the Perth Scorchers drew 41,921 fans — their second-largest home game turnout — as they secured a 33-run victory over reigning champions Brisbane Heat.
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley celebrated the achievement, saying: “Boxing Day 2024 has been a landmark moment for Australian Cricket. Setting a new single-day attendance record is a testament to the sport’s nationwide appeal. We’re thrilled by the incredible support and look forward to an exciting remainder of the summer.”
