Deakin University and University of Wollongong bring Australian education to India with their new campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat—bridging borders through learning

Deakin University and the University of Wollongong have launched branch campuses in Gujarat’s GIFT City, the first-ever foreign universities to do so in India. This step not only reflects the growing educational ties between India and Australia but also marks a fresh approach to making quality international education accessible to Indian students at home.

Deakin University has maintained a strong connection with India since 1994 and opened its GIFT City campus in early 2024. Offering postgraduate programs in Business Analytics and Cyber Security, the university aims to prepare students for emerging global challenges in technology and business.

The University of Wollongong is also gearing up to commence its operations in GIFT City, further broadening opportunities for Indian students to engage with Australian academic excellence.

GIFT City, located in Gandhinagar, has been designed as a hub for global financial and IT services. With the addition of these universities, it is now set to emerge as a promising destination for international education.

India’s National Education Policy 2020 encourages partnerships with foreign universities, paving the way for initiatives like these. Indian students can now pursue Australian degrees without leaving their home country, bridging the gap between global aspirations and local realities.

For many, this move will open doors to advanced education, particularly for those who might find studying abroad financially out of reach. It is expected that this development will also create pathways to lucrative careers within India, aligning education with local employment opportunities.

The presence of Deakin University and the University of Wollongong is likely to encourage more global institutions to consider similar ventures in India, further enhancing GIFT City’s profile as an academic and innovation hub.

The collaboration between these universities and India reflects a shared commitment to providing transformative educational opportunities. With these campuses, Indian students gain the chance to thrive on a global stage, without crossing borders.
