If you work in Victoria’s community services, contract cleaning, or security industries, it’s important to know about this Scheme.
Established by the Victorian Government in 2019, the Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme allows workers in these three industries to earn long service benefits even if they change jobs.
This applies to full-time, part-time, casual, and fixed-term employment.
In Australia, workers typically become eligible for long service leave after a lengthy period of employment with the same employer. However, since job movement is common in these industries, the Scheme enables eligible workers to enjoy portable long service entitlements, regardless of how many employers they have had.
Employers contribute to the Scheme by paying a levy, making it one of Australia’s largest portable long service leave programs. The Portable Long Service Authority manages the Scheme, which has nearly 400,000 registered workers in Victoria.
Workers can verify their eligibility for the Scheme on the Portable Long Service Authority website. You can also check if your employer has registered you with the Scheme, as it is a legal requirement for employers to register their eligible workers.
Your employer is responsible for recording your hours and pay, and for submitting this information to the Authority.
After you have completed at least 7 years of service under the Scheme, you can apply for your long service leave, allowing you to take paid time off for a holiday or receive a cash payment.
