A striking new mural at Accor Stadium now honours the Matildas’ extraordinary run in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This morning, I helped unveil a new artwork immortalising the Matildas’ history-making performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.” He emphasised that the mural features all key players and captures captain Sam Kerr’s unforgettable goal against England. “Sam Kerr is an Australian legend whose image, alongside her team, deserves to be projected onto Accor Stadium,” Minns added.

The artwork, crafted by artist Kirthana Selvaraj, stretches 57 metres across the exterior of the Cathy Freeman Stand. It showcases pivotal moments from the tournament, including Sam Kerr’s celebrated goal against England, Mackenzie Arnold’s goalkeeping heroics, and Courtney Vine’s decisive penalty against France.

Selvaraj shared her honour in creating the piece, stating, “Women in sport have always been a vital part of the game’s history, and this work is a celebration of their enduring legacy.” She hopes the mural serves as a lasting reminder of the impact women have made in shaping the public’s connection to sport.

The mural will be publicly displayed in April, coinciding with the Matildas’ upcoming matches in Sydney and Newcastle. This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to honour female athletes, following the renaming of Accor Stadium’s eastern grandstand after Cathy Freeman OAM.

The Matildas’ World Cup campaign captivated the nation, breaking records in viewership and inspiring a new generation of athletes. Premier Minns remarked, “It’s long overdue that our nation’s inspirational female athletes are provided with recognition of some of the greatest sporting achievements in our nation’s history.”

This mural celebrates the team’s achievements and serves as a lasting tribute to their influence on Australian sport and culture.
